Meta's Always-On Camera Prototype: The Centralization Trap We Refuse to See

But as a Web3 community founder who has spent years analyzing power structures in decentralized systems, I see something else: the most dangerous centralization experiment since Facebook's Cambridge Analytica scandal.

Context: The Human Cost of Perpetual Surveillance. We have been here before. In 2017, I audited over 50 ICO whitepapers, and only 12 had viable economic models. The common thread? They all promised decentralization but kept admin keys tightly held. Meta's Ray-Ban glasses are the hardware equivalent: a sleek, beautiful product that hides a single point of control. The current model already uploads voice and camera data to Meta's servers. The 'super sensing' prototype goes a step further—it records your entire visual environment, analyzes it in real time, and sends that data to a centralized AI model. There is no local-first processing, no encryption keys in your hands, no option to opt out of data collection. 'Code binds, but people break or build'—and here, the code is built to bind you to Meta's infrastructure.

Core: The Technical Architecture of Control. From a blockchain perspective, the core problem is not the camera—it's the data pipeline. Always-on sensing requires three things: continuous video capture, high-bandwidth upload to cloud servers, and a centralized AI inference engine. Each step breaks the fundamental principles of self-sovereignty. In decentralized identity systems, users hold their own cryptographic keys and control data granularity. Meta's model offers none of that. The prototype likely uses a combination of edge AI (for initial object detection) and cloud processing (for complex reasoning). But even edge AI decisions are guided by models trained on centralized data sets owned by Meta. This is not just a privacy risk—it is a structural power imbalance. 'Trust is the only currency that matters,' and Meta has already spent its trust reserves on years of data breaches and surveillance capitalism.

Contrarian: The Pragmatic Trap. Some will argue that Meta's approach is the only way to achieve low-latency, high-accuracy sensing at scale. They will point to blockchain's scalability issues—zero-knowledge proofs are still computationally heavy, and decentralized storage is slower than AWS. They are right, but only in the short term.
