Crypto is often sold as a trustless system, but the infrastructure that connects it is anything but. Remote access to exchange servers, validator nodes, and liquidity aggregators often relies on corporate VPNs. dVPNs like Orchid or Sentinel are gaining traction, but the vast majority of institutional crypto ops still use traditional VPN gateways. Because patches require reboot, testing, and approval in regulated environments (FedRAMP, SOC 2). In crypto, many DeFi protocols run on bare-metal servers with manual update cycles. The window isn’t 4 days – it’s weeks or months.

Here’s the contrarian angle: the VPN category itself is facing a trust recession. This isn’t a one-time bug; it’s a paradigm failure. The next wave of security tokens won’t be about encrypting traffic – they’ll be about decoupling authentication from network access. Zero-trust, mTLS, and identity-first architectures will eat the VPN market from within.
